Pause When It Feels Off

Alcohol does not make consent clearer

Warmth after drinks can feel convincing, but intoxication is not reliable evidence of sober intent or current consent.

The evening got looser with every drink, and suddenly the flirting felt much bigger than before. The problem is that alcohol can make almost anything feel more certain than it really is.

Treat intoxication as a stop sign

If either person is too intoxicated to think clearly, make decisions, or remember the night well, do not push sex or other intimate escalation.

The right move is to slow down, not to see how far things can go.

Do not use memory gaps as permission

If someone seems fuzzy, forgetful, or inconsistent the next day, that is not an invitation to reinterpret the night in your favor.

The absence of a clear sober yes is not a yes.

Shift to safety and support

Offer water, a ride, a trusted friend, or a separate safe place to sleep.

If someone is in medical distress or immediate danger, contact local emergency help where you are.

Say it clearly and briefly

  • You have had enough to drink, so we are stopping here.
  • Let’s get you home safely and talk another day.
  • I am not comfortable escalating this while either of us is drunk.

Responses that make things harder

  • Treating intoxication like a hidden yes
  • Pushing for sex because the mood feels easy
  • Using memory gaps to justify what happened

Write a one-line exit plan for a date that includes a safe ride, water, and a sober follow-up conversation.

When safety comes before conversation

Talk about contraception and sexual health while everyone is clear-headed and before becoming intimate. If your memory is unclear or you are worried something happened without your consent, seek appropriate medical support instead of handling it alone.

Before you decide

  • Was anyone too intoxicated to consent clearly?
  • Did I stop instead of escalating?
  • Did I focus on safety, transport, and support?
  • Did I avoid treating fuzzy memory as permission?
